Installation and Video Stills
Thanks for visiting.
This website is devoted to my artistic endeavors, as opposed to my other endeavors. It is organized primarily by the ideas and thoughts that I find interesting enough to make art about. Each heading represents either the title or the idea behind the work portrayed. Over the last few years I have been interested in the idea that ugly and cliche, (two very powerful ideas) can be tackled, turned upside down, investigated, in hopes of finding a truth that has been over looked.
Below is my artist statement that I wrote for my current solo show CLICHE.
Artist Statement
In the early 1800’s, Firmin Didot, printer, publisher, and type designer perfected the technique of the stereotype block, also called a cliché. A cliché was a process by which moveable type was cast then molded to make a copy of the original plate. During the casting process a clicking sound was made which resembles the French word clicher, or cliché, which means to click. The cliché plate allowed for many duplicate plates to be made, thus allowing a print job to be printed by multiple presses. The cliché process made printing faster and cheaper, making books and publications more affordable.
Today the dictionary definition of cliché is: a phrase or opinion that is over used and betrays a lack of original thought.
As a history buff and printmaker this fascinated me.
The work in this show explores the idea that Cliché may or may not betray lack of original thought.
